uk trip hop legend howie b teaming up with the jersey deep house don jus ed? you better believe it! according to howie b himself, who proudly declared on his facebook page -the theme is cinema. the mood is deep.- cinetrax vol. 1 is the first part of three 12-s which will be presented for the project. the slow grinding electro pop of -salty dance- is something that you could have imagined ryan gosling cruising the streets of dtla after midnight in drive, while -the breach- does have cinematic aspects about it, in a way, but sounds more like an early robert hood track on -8, we really liked this bleepy and cyclical excursion in minimalism. on the flip -the essence of new- fuels some exotic daydream fantasies with its chilled and atmospheric beats while -phat harp ban- is a darkly aquatic smack electro number, that brings to mind that epic underwater bank heist in scene in sexy beast.

larry and bell are two musos from the east and west of the atlantic, who met on a scuba trip in belize in 99. larry plays bongos, bell is on the organic sampler and echo pedal, and a local cast of musicians backed them up on guitar, double bass, and kick drum. after a few rum daiquiris and many spliff, these are the sessions whittled down to strictly the best of hits.

sentinelas is the first album release on rudimentary records. produced and conceived by irish producer mick “t-woc” donohoe the album is the result of a trip donohoe took to brazil in 2014. built off samples from records bought in a dusty sao paulo warehouse, sentinelas is the unintentional soundtrack to a 1970s brazilian educational comic book, fusing together hip-hop, electronic music, and dub to tell a strange-but-true story of discovery, antibodies, and cockroach shit dust.

valere aude, the debut album from romans, a collaborative project between new york techno producer gunnar haslam and vienna-based acid evangelist johannes auvinen (aka tin man). featuring 12 tracks of hallucinogenic, psychedelic techno, valere aude is an acid-etched trip to the outer reaches of the mind.

huge remix package with works from thomas hessler, norman nodge, ron albrecht and the automatic message. the label from avion strikes with its 8th installment releasing a kicking remix package from the previous crossing 007 various artists. the release starts with the thomas hessler remix of “sut“ a track from the argentinian producer pfirter. thomas used the outer atmosphere bringing it to an upper tempo defining a groove made for the floors. norman nodge and his minimal trip from avion’s explosive track “thrill“. flimmering noises, a reduced drum and an atmosphere which is between lunatic and melancholic warmth. in ron albrechts remix of doka’s “mural“ the time is still running different, staying surreal wthout losing ist mood kicking off to move the floor. the automatic message lay their hands on stefan rein’s “amorphous material“ and stripped down the punchy and jacking atmosphere to a reduced version without losing its functionality and highlighting the characteristic synth pad to remain the smile factor of the original track.

canadian minimal standard-bearer pheek is the fifth artist to sign up for the untold stories protagonist series, and he s packing some of the crispest grooves he s laid down in some time. -lonely wolf- is everything a minimal house track should be, with a crackling, shuffling beat and layers of subtle orchestration building into a soul-stirring groover. -father- however takes a more abstract route into off-kilter percussion and exotic found sounds specifically arranged to tickle the mind. that leaves it to -the logical question to come is yet to be defined- to dominate the b-side in a 16-minute trip that moves through all manner of moods and moments.

the chemical brothers invite us to a trip through their soundscapes. great 2002 album.

moscow records close 2016 with a fantastic 3-track ep from berlin imports roustam and tolga fidan. this being their first outing together, the pair deliver a high quality, intelligent journey through minimal house and techno. the record opens with brodsky beat, a groovy, dance floor-focused track. lively percussion and tight bass communicate perfectly with the hope-filled lead to build tension throughout. the omega variant on the a2 has a much more abstract feel. broken beats and skippy percussion play back and forth with deep, spacey hooks and a peculiar synth, giving the listener a sense of mystery. finally, growing up is just a phase is a calming 14 minute trip that uses the entirety of the b side to tell a story of reassurance and calm. laid-back rhythms, guitar samples, relaxed vocals and a wandering synth line work together to form the perfect warmup track.

kapote loves the funk. and he loves blaxploitation movies. the black underground cinema from the 1970ies. kapote samples dirty talk from these movies and puts it on his bass lines. melodic basslines with a heavy 1070 funk vibe. bass lines that can create a sexual tension. kapote adds a few warm, jazzy rhodes piano chords and a lot of reverbs and filtering. and the music rolls. often more like a jam then like a constructed piece of music. in the highest points this music is pure endorphin. it s 4 to the floor - but it has a soulful analogue sound. kapote says he was listening to records from old detroit label red planet and parisian downtempo pioneers motorbass and la funk mob while making this record. and yes, the vibe is there. like these guys kapote likes to build his musical trips around snippets from old funk vinyl. adding beats with vintage drum machines and creating an eclectic trip into a universe full of jazzy bits, noisy drums and dirty samples.

“drugstore phones” is a double lp from russian wizard piper spray. this enigmatic producer is a hidden gem of russian electronic underground. the album is taking you on an unexpected trip in many ways - it’s hard to define the genre but one can feel the author’s willingness to experiment and explore new sounds. this sonic documentary of piper’s world is breathing and constantly changing, though it’s the most balanced and mature work of the author. a spectacular opener for gost zvuk’s gatefold lp series.

bradley met duke hugh in amsterdam, when he handed him a green usb stick after a show. he played the promos in the empty club and the first track immediately grabbed his attention - he knew it was something special. when he remembered the hook to green leaf the next morning he signed the release almost instantly. each song has its own essence, there is absolutely no filler and the entire double pack sits together as a perfect whole. flirting with aspects of broken beat, jazz, hip hop and dreamy electronica - duke hugh winds together a most idiosyncratic release equally at home on the peak time dancefloor as it would be for a long road trip. canvas is a big statement from an artist who s here to stay.

between the vast flatlands of western ukraine and the pacific shores of vladivostok, a new quirky techno underground has been racking up hefty grid rhythms below the radar. initially free from the weekend routines of the established club circuit, producers from etapp kyle to stanislav tolkachev have been experimenting with the possibilities of shifting grids in their post-socialist bedroom studios.

berlin based adam marshall and christian andersen collaborate as graze. in the latest installment of our ufo series, the dekmantel records offshoot dedicated to experimental and futuristic electronic music, the canadian veteran producers serve up a 50/50 lethal/dreamy drum trax package. many have applauded the versatility of graze, and their xup ep is yet more proof of their original minds. xup is an abstract 4/4 jugular, beating out devious percussive patterns and rattling hi-hats over a grizzled and arpeggiated synth mortar-fire. vast on the other hand is an esoteric slow-burner, a hallucinatory trip to the depths of analog synth paradise and a perfect intro, outro or home listening gem. on the flip, the hyper-lean gearshift of tryptch pumps energy through off-kilter and plunderphonic basslines, while shadow play’is a classic piece of breakbeat bliss including a celestial synth arrangement that makes a perfect soundtrack for slow-speed sci-fi rides.

african scream contest’ is the third release by the analog africa label. the project initially took off in august 2005 when label owner and vinyl collector samy ben redjeb arrived in cotonou, benin, “without any special expectations, just hoping to lay my hands on few good records - what i found in the process cannot really be described in words-. this first trip was followed by eight more to the region. thirty months and few thousand records later analog africa proudly presents this 14-track compilation. redjeb conducted 16 interviews in various cities in benin and togo with artists, producers and sound engineers to reconstruct the history of the 70s music scene for the 44 pages booklet which also features many rare photographs directly received from the artists. delve into the forgotten raw and psychedelic afro sounds from 70s benin and togo and experience the african scream contest. very, very limited copies in, and this might notcome in anymore.... tip!

following his stunning everything is nothing ep, which kicked off the hubble telescope series for solar one music in 2015, luxus varta (aka emeric di paolo) is back with a new four track ep for french label, intramuros. ‘rosenhan experiment’ (named after david rosenhan’s famous study to determine the validity of psychiatric diagnosis, published in 1973 under the title “on being sane in insane places”) takes us on another electro trip into the human mind with paris the black fu from detroit grand pubahs once again making an appearance, on the track ‘losquato’. the ep opens with the wonderfully shimmering ‘wenn’ before luxus varta makes striking use of his background as a drummer on ‘lizzy’. ‘losquato’ is a playful addition with stripped back rhythms under paris’ story telling that bemoans a man’s work frustrations and resulting mental state (“i gave up therapy about a month ago. my therapist jumped out of a window”), while closer ‘tempsun’ is almost melancholy in its measured minimalism. recommended for lovers of drexciya and dopplereffekt.

this one is for the dreamers - first up is ‘aa’ from newcomer t. margos, it’s your ultimate chance to cop that secret banger that s been blowing up dance-floors from london to budapest this year. it’s a tricky one - taking your mind into the stars with deep spacey pads, but yet working your body with the raw 303 bass and painfully heavy 909 treatment. next on the a-side, swiss wunderkind douala’s turn to fuel that spaceship of your dreams. ‘it’s all in your mind’ soothes your soul with dubby space echoes, tear jerking chord progressions and a dreamy acid bassline.
as we slip into the lucid state of the dream, over on the b-side ray kandinski’s ‘dirty sneakers’ pieces together the kind dimension shifting dream-state that disneyland could barely imagine. when those vocals and pads kick in, combined with the tricky beats everything becomes a wash of surrealism and logic – and it all happens just in time for you to awake into yet another dream, this time deep within your sub-conscious on ‘walk through’ by the mysterious dj lucy with mike l. a nostalgic trip to your most beautiful memories, with uplifting flutes and juno chords.

this monster 1976 lp from nassau s munnings brothers aka beginning of the end is a stone cold classic. fact. well deserving of a place in any record collection! this, their second lp (with 1971s infamous funky nassau preceding it) features the brothers original, fresh sound a mixture of tough funk rhythms, bahamian soul and flourishes of jazz and rock is an extremely well executed and produced body of work. not surprising considering the band were one of the bahamas foremost musical outfits. the brothers musical backgrounds could not have been any more fitting, they cut their teeth playing regularly alongside the likes of nat king cole and count basie at their fathers well known nightclub the cat and the fiddle, what we get on this lp however is not jazz, but lean, melodic soul music! original copies of this seminal lp can change hands for 100 s on the used/second hand market and is a solid constant at the tops of the wants lists of record aficionados. the lp has been illegally reissued numerous times without any care or attention being taken to retain or respect the quality of the amazing music contained within. not so on this occasion, this is a fully legit, sanctioned reissue done in conjunction and with the assistance of miami s tk disco empire. now is the perfect time to revisit the deep, soulful sounds of the munnings brothers endeavours, a truly sublime collection of songs, drenched in sunshine, masterfully produced and performed with pure vitality. a truly classic album. sounding as fresh as it did almost 40 years ago. jump in the water!
